Modi on India's new Cyber Security Policy





India is going to come up with a new information security strategy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared during his speech on India's 74th Independence Day on Saturday.

The Prime Minister addressed the nation from the red fort ramparts and said threats from cyber space could effect the society , economy and development of India. The Prime Minister said that cyber space threats would threaten all these aspects of Indian life.

"The government is concerned about this," Modi said adding that a policy on this will be coming out early by the government.

Statements from the prime minister come against the backdrop of rising cyber attacks and psychological warfare from countries like Pakistan and China.

According to news reports, social media activists from China and Pakistan claimed to have joined hands during the border tensions in Ladakh to start propaganda campaigns against India. When the battle took place on 5-6 May along the Pangong Lake, Weibo — Twitter's Chinese edition — featured pictures of Indian soldiers bound up and lying on the ground, referring to the Indian Army's muscular depiction of Bollywood.

Implementing a national March shutdown prompted companies let their workers operate from home. This also raised the threat of cyber-attacks against a range of Indian businesses.

According to a Kaspersky report, in the quarter of April-June, there is a 37 per cent rise in cyber attacks against Indian companies compared to the quarter of January-March. In recent months there have been also that in India phishing attacks which have provided information on covid-19 and the equipment or free trials in order to rob personal information. CERT-In, India's main cybersafety agency, also issued an advisory on an unprecedented phishing attack on India in June.
